The family of the 16-year-old girl, who was gang-raped and murdered in West Bengal, on Tuesday met President Pranab Mukherjee demanding stringent punishment for the guilty.
The court also directed the state to pay a compensation of Rs 17 lakh to the family of the deceased doctor.
The verdict said that the aggravating circumstances outweigh the mitigating ones and hence, the convicts did not deserve any leniency.
The rallies were organised from R G Kar hospital, Sagore Dutta Hospital, SSKM Hospital, Calcutta Medical College, and Jadavpur in south Kolkata.
The SIT headed by Monika Bhardwaj submitted the charge sheet on Friday.
'They should be given a strong message that they are not the ones who decide the rule of the land, and they are not the ones who decide what justice is.'
A preliminary inquiry by the Crime Branch-Crime Investigation Department into the Banda rape case has found that Bahujan Samaj Party legislator Purushottam Naresh Dwiwedi had raped the teenager and framed her in a false theft case, official sources said on Tuesday. "The CB-CID, which was asked to probe the matter by Chief Minister Mayawati, has completed a preliminary inquiry and is ready with its report," a senior official said.
He said the incident occurred on August 12 at the busstahd and the police were informed about it Saturday evening.
Later, the Central Bureau of Investigation took over the probe and found that the two women were never raped or murdered.

The court said that in the instant case the investigating officer adopted a "lethargic attitude" throughout the investigation.
